Jacky Winter

Today I met with Sarah Ewing at SEA, the photography branch of the Jacky Winter Group. It was great to talk about the emerging creativity in Melbourne and as Sarah had also lived in London, talking about the similarities and differenced in the cities. 

I explained the Producer role I have been doing in various agencies in London for the past 3 years and how we are more aligned with the creative department than account management - and that I am hoping to find a similar role here in Melbourne.

Work by Oslo Davis (not in the exhibition)

In the Lamington Drive gallery they have within their office in Collingwood there was an exhibition of cartoon work by Oslo Davis called As If, to be honest I had not heard of his work, but it was brilliant. Funny and some great observations. There was also a wall with some re-worked classic modern Australian art pieces including Russell Drysdale and Brett Whiteley - the latter was an 'improved' replica of an editioned print that my uncle used to have on his living room wall. 

If you are in Melbourne, and you have time, go and see it.

Vue

I forgot to post that Michelle from Vue came in to see me a couple of weeks ago at Mother to show me Gareth Morgans book. She had popped in here at W+K today to see one of the other project managers so we had another catch up.

Some amazingly tantalising food shots.... makes me hungry just looking at them, unfortunately I have a pre-made salad in the fridge.

We Are Flock

I've been at Mother a couple of weeks now, just freelancing still kids.

Lou from We are Flock came in to see me here at Mother today to show me some work. I am not sure how the process works for getting in books (so any agents reading this please let me know if you want to come in and I will ask the powers that be).

Lou showed me some updated stuff from the talented  Jonathan Minster's book including some great personal work with perfume bottles. And also New Future Graphic's book which had some brilliant V&A work.

Hmm Ice Cream

I know it's not really the weather for it (2 degrees outside, flurries of snow and grey skies), but looking through some shots this morning I came across this gem from the lovely Diana Miller.
Makes me want Ice Cream. Now.

Wyatt Clarke & Jones

This morning James came in from Wyatt Clarke & Jones to show us some books, including Jenny Van Sommers, Sophie Ebrard and Todd Antony.
Really nice books. particularly Sophie's she has a nice human feel about her shots. Anyway, I'm not here to judge, just inform. Take a look for yourselves...

Making Pictures

Yesterday we had Tim from Making Pictures come in and show us some new books.

We saw the book of a new signing of theirs, Sam Hoffman. some really interesting compositions and builds, a new talent to look out for.

Also the brilliant Channel 4 Paralympics work from The Wade Brothers, I really love this work, I was more inspired by the paralympics probably more than the olympics, and these images are particularly inspiring - now, off to my spin class!

Image Brief

This is a really interesting company Image Brief, launched in Australia 10 months ago.
Photographers only make public shots which they have selected/sold and the rest just sit dormant on their computers, this site is where photographers sign up, select genre of photography and can sell their images on request.
We, as image buyers, go to the site, put in a description of the image they want, how much we want to pay (from $200), and when we need the image by. A note is generated to all the photographers who specialise in that genre and they all submit images which they already have which may fit the brief. Then we select the image. As we have already entered a cost this is the cost of the image.
You can also brief a specific image if you want. I probably would not use this bit but I can see it could be useful for some people.
Beats using image libraries (unless you really only have budget for £10 images!)

Bonakdar Cleary

On Wednesday Seamus and Tara from Bonakdar Cleary popped in to show us some of their amazing talent on offer. It was great to see some new work from Levon Biss (Swimmer, below) and also some work from the brilliant Peter Funch, this shot he set up the camera on a street corner and all these people holding the yellow envelope came at different times (un-planned) and he composed the images with the individual frames.

Vue

The lovely ladies from Vue came into us a few weeks ago, I have been a little busy to find time to post about it.

They had some great new work and some old work, but it was great to meet all of them and spend some time looking through the books and hearing the stories behind the images; probably something I find the most interesting about agent visits, I always want to know how it was done.

I particularly loved Charlie Cranes work (below) especially this striking image of the woman all dressed in pink, almost Chanel suit, holding a rifle. Brilliant.

Soon after I entered Vue's Easter competition where they hid several Easter eggs in the images on their site and if you found them all you could enter to win an iPad. I won. Stoked!

Jonathan Knowles

This morning Emma and Zoe came in to see us here at Albion from Jonathan Knowles studio, he has some great new work in his updated portfolio, both commissioned and personal projects, including these great coloured sand images. And the brilliant 'broken Britain' image for the Guardian which was commissioned by Wieden & Kennedy London.

Lucid

Last week we had Hat from Lucid come in and show us some books. There was some great work from Alistair Hood, Con Poulos and Mark Harrison among others. Really nice stuff. Unfortunately with PC's not being able to take screenshots (well) I can't show you my favorites of theirs, but here is a great shot by Robyn Vickers who is also represented by Luid.

Carole Lambert

Bruce from Carole Lambert came in to see us here at Albion with some interesting books for the creatives and producers to have a look through.
Always great to see Jean Yves Lemoigne's book, lovely work for Axe (BBH London):

New & Old

Last week Matt Barlow and Jessie came in from Germaine Walker to show us some books and a new signing. It was just before lunch and they were showing us some of Matt's gorgeous food shots which we were salivating over. Here's one of Matt's shots, chip butty...hmmmmm

Stick it in the diary

Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2011, 5 April - 1 May 2011.

It's been going for 15 years now, £30k prize. The 4 Shortlisted artists: (details copied from The Photographers' Gallery site)

Roe Ethridge (b.1969, USA) is nominated for his solo exhibition at Les Recontres d’Arles Photography 2010, France (3 July – 19 September 2010).

Thomas Demand (b.1964, Germany) is nominated for his exhibition, Nationalgalerie, at Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (18 September 2009 – 17 January 2010).

Jim Goldberg (b.1953, USA) is nominated for his exhibition Open See at The Photographers’ Gallery, London (16 October 2009 – 31 January 2010).

Elad Lassry (b.1977, Israel) is nominated for his exhibition Elad Lassry at Kunsthalle Zürich (13 February – 25 April 2010).

Sven Prim

I have spent the past few weeks speaking with Sven's agent Molly about a shoot for a project I am working on, unfortunately he did not get the job but Molly was amazing and patient, and championed Sven's work really well. He is quite remarkable, at about 25 years of age he was signed to Molly whilst still at university in Sweden. He does his own retouching too. Certainly one to watch.

Something for Christmas

My brother in-law is studying Photography at Bolton University and has done a project based on the work of Canadian photographer Diana Thorneycroft, to be honest I had not heard of her before he sent me a link to her work, I am not sure whether I should be disturbed or intrigued. I think I am both!

AOP Awards last night

The AOP award ceremony was last night at Sadlers Wells. The winner of Photographer of the Year was Karin Berndl (one of her works is above) who also won a silver and bronze award in the Commissioned: Still Life category. 2009 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize & Exhibition

The 2009 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize has been awarded to Paul Graham. There is an exhibition of the entries at The Photographers' Gallery until the 12th of April.
The annual Prize of £30,000 rewards a living photographer, of any nationality, who has made the most significant contribution to photography in Europe, through either an exhibition or publication, over the past year.
